MEET CHRIS!
New leadership ready to serve West Virginia District 91
Chris Clagett has many years of Navy leadership and experience while he served our nation as a member of the United States Navy Medical Corps.
Chris hopes to bring to the voters of District 91 the benefit of his Medical Corps experience, specializing in preventive medicine and public health. Chris had numerous leadership roles as a medical officer, including department head, director, regional consultant, and principal investigator in disease transmission outbreaks. Chris attained the rank of Captain and retired in 2019 after 34 years of service.
His background qualifications include his Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Therapy (1986) from the University of Maryland, a Doctor of Medicine degree (1992) from the F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, a Master of Science degree in Business Administration (1998) from Boston University, and a Master of Public Health (2000) from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. Chris completed his residency in General Preventive Medicine and Public Health in 2001.
Chris has nine years of operational field medicine experience, serving six years with the Fleet Marine Force and three years with the Coastal / Riverine Forces.
He served as the Preventive Medicine Officer and Department Head in Sigonella, Italy, as well as the Regional Consultant for CENTCOM and AFRICOM and as the co-developer for deployed unit syndromic surveillance system for Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Chris deployed with the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force that was responsible for securing the Iraq Al Anbar Province.
Chris served a double tour as Director, Preventive Medicine with the Navy and Marine Corps Public Health Center in Portsmouth, VA. From this position, Chris deployed as the Preventive Medicine Officer for the Multi-National Corps in Baghdad, Iraq.
He supervised and directed statistical and epidemiologic assets, generating data to support policy recommendations to the Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery for approval. If those recommendations were approved, Chris helped implement those policies.
Chris later served as the Senior Preventive Medicine Officer in Norfolk, VA, where he trained officers in the art of their medical specialty and as the Group Surgeon for the Coastal Riverine Group II in Little Creek, VA. This operational medicine assignment involved primary care for two active component patrol boat squadrons comprised of around 1800 sailors.
Chris has served his country with dignity and purpose throughout his long Navy career. He now feels that same passion to serve his state in a new capacity and run to be the Delegate representative for his district that he calls home.
